Krishna aarti · Sung in Krishna worship, on Janmashtami, and at Vrindavan-tradition temples.

Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki

A beloved aarti to Lord Krishna (Kunj Bihari — the one who roams the groves of Vrindavan), composed in his playful, flute-bearing form.

Refrain

Aarti Kunj Bihari ki, Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

The aarti of Kunj Bihari — of Shri Krishna, the lifter of Govardhan and slayer of the demon Mura.

Verse 1

Gale mein baijanti mala, bajave murli madhur bala,

Shravan mein kundal jhalkala, Nand ke anand Nandlala,

Gagan sam ang kanti kali, Radhika chamak rahi aali,

Latan mein thadhe banmali, bhramar si alak, kasturi tilak,

chandra si jhalak, lalit chhavi Shyama pyari ki.

Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

A vaijayanti garland at his throat, the youthful one plays the sweet flute; earrings glint at his ears — the joy of Nanda, the darling Nandlala. His form is dark as the sky, with Radhika shining at his side; the garlanded one stands among the vines — curls like bees, a musk tilak, a moonlike glow — the lovely image dear to Shyama.

Verse 2

Kanakmay mor mukut bilse, devata darsan ko tarse,

Gagan son suman raasi barse, baje murchang, madhur mridang,

Gwalin sang, atul rati gop kumari ki.

Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

A golden peacock-crown shines on him; even the gods long for his sight. Flowers rain from the sky, the jew's-harp and sweet mridanga sound — amid the cowherd maidens, matchless is the love of the gopis.

Verse 3

Jahan te prakat bhai Ganga, kalush kali harini Shri Ganga,

Smaran te hot moh bhanga, basi Siv sees, jata ke beech,

harai agh keech, charan chhavi Shri Banwari ki.

Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

From his feet the Ganga sprang forth — Shri Ganga, who washes away the sins of the Kali age; remembering her, delusion breaks. She dwells on Shiva's head, amid his matted locks, washing away the mire of sin — such is the glory of Banwari's (Krishna's) feet.

Verse 4

Chamakti ujjwal tat renu, baj rahi Vrindavan benu,

Chahun disi gopi gwal dhenu, hansat mridu mand, chandni chand,

The bright sands of the riverbank glitter, the flute of Vrindavan plays; on every side are gopis, cowherds, and cows. Softly smiling, moonlike, he cuts the bonds of worldly existence — hearing the call of the poor and the destitute.
