Chandogya Upanishad

छान्दोग्योपनिषद्

'That thou art.' A father dissolves salt in water, again and again, to show his son the Self that fills all things.

Dialogues in this Upanishad

  • Tat Tvam Asi — the Salt in Water — A father teaches his book-proud son with a lump of salt dissolved overnight: unseen, yet in every drop. 'That subtle essence — thou art that.'
  • All This Is Brahman — Sarvam khalvidam brahma. Shandilya sets the infinite Self in the cave of the heart — smaller than a grain of rice, larger than all the worlds.
  • Indra, Virochana, and the True Self — A god and a demon study with the Creator for the same Self. One takes the first answer home content; the other keeps coming back, uneasy.
