A muhurat date is chosen for everyone, then checked against the person. The first check, Tarabala, needs only your birth star (janma nakshatra). No birth time, no account; the star is remembered only on your device.
Count from your birth star to the day’s star, counting your own star as the first. Divide the count into nines: the place in the nine is the day’s tara. The day’s star is the nakshatra prevailing at local sunrise in your city; if the Moon moves on before sunset, the day says so.
The nine repeat three times across the 27 stars. Some texts soften the three caution taras in the second and third rounds; this page shows the round and treats all three alike. Tarabala is set out in Muhurta Chintamani, a classical text on choosing a muhurat.
This is the first personal check, not the whole muhurat. It does not check Chandrabala (the Moon’s sign counted from your own) or your full chart, and your family priest’s reading comes first. A festival’s own day is fixed by the calendar and is never graded here.
