Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu — born, the tradition holds, at midday on the ninth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. That midday detail shapes the whole observance: where Janmashtami builds to midnight, Ram Navami culminates at noon, when conches sound and the birth is announced.

The day also closes Chaitra Navratri — the spring nine nights — so in many households it arrives as the summit of a longer observance. Its practice is scriptural at heart: the day belongs to the Ramayana, recited, sung, and listened to.
