Hanuman Jayanti honors the birth of Hanuman — Rama's greatest devotee and the tradition's living definition of strength placed wholly in service. The most widely kept date is the full moon of Chaitra, with a sunrise observance, since a strong tradition places his birth at dawn; several regions keep the jayanti on other dates in their own calendars, and each is legitimate in its lineage.
The day's practice is recitation more than ritual: the Hanuman Chalisa, and for many households the whole Sunderkand — the Ramayana's fifth book, whose hero is Hanuman himself — sung in a single sitting.

Different lineages preserve different birth traditions and calendar reckonings — Chaitra Purnima is the most widespread in the North, while some southern and other regional traditions keep the jayanti at other points of the year. The tradition treats these as parallel observances, not contradictions.
The Sunderkand is the one book of the Ramayana in which Hanuman is the central actor — the leap to Lanka, the finding of Sita, the burning of the city. Reciting it on his jayanti honors him with his own story, which is why the day is the year's great Sunderkand day.
