Holi 2026

March 4th – March 5th, 2026

March 2026 KrishnaVishnu

Holi is two festivals in one arc. On the evening of Phalguna Purnima, the Holika Dahan bonfire burns — commemorating the devotee-prince Prahlada, who survived the fire that consumed Holika because his trust in Vishnu did not waver, a story the Puranas tell as the template of bhakti under pressure. The next morning is Rangwali Holi: colors, water, music, and the deliberate dissolving of the year's social stiffness.

Holi is also the great festival of Braj — the land of Krishna's childhood — where the color-play between Krishna and Radha's villages is re-enacted every year, most famously in the Lathmar Holi of Barsana. The festival's spirit is renewal: winter ends, grudges are (at least for a day) set down, and the community starts its spring on speaking terms.

How it is observed

  • Holika Dahan on the Purnima evening: a community bonfire lit after sunset, circumambulated with prayers; households offer roasted grains and coconut to the fire.
  • Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) the next morning: colors and water among family and neighbors; the traditional greeting is an embrace that sets aside the year's friction.
  • Festive foods of the season — gujiya, thandai — shared with visitors through the day.
  • In Braj and much of the North, Holi songs (hori) and Krishna-Radha traditions frame the celebration; in Bengal the same season is kept as Dol Jatra, with Krishna's image swung and processed with color.

Frequently asked questions

When is Holi in 2026?

Holi runs from March 4th, 2026 to March 5th, 2026 in 2026 — a 2-day observance.

What does the Holika Dahan bonfire commemorate?

The story of Prahlada: his aunt Holika, immune to fire, carried the boy into the flames to destroy him for his devotion to Vishnu — and the immunity failed her while Prahlada emerged unharmed. The bonfire marks the burning away of that which opposes devotion.

Is there a puja on Holi itself, or is it only celebration?

The ritual center is Holika Dahan on the eve — the bonfire is worshipped before it is lit. Rangwali Holi the next day is deliberately festive rather than liturgical; in Krishna traditions the day is kept with singing and color as itself a form of devotion.
