A reading lens over the Bhagavatam, not a passage of it

Surrender and grace

शरणागति

Rescue comes when strength runs out: the elephant, the queen and the king are saved at the point they stop relying on themselves.

Where the text shows it

  • Kunti asks for calamities — Skandha 1, adhyaya 8 — As Krishna's chariot turns for Dvaraka, his aunt stops it and asks for something no one asks for: more trouble.
  • Ajamila calls his son — Skandha 6, adhyayas 1-3 — A dying man calls his youngest son, Narayana, and the name stops Yama's messengers at the bedside.
  • Vritra's prayer — Skandha 6, adhyayas 9-12 — The demon Indra must kill turns out to be a devotee, and prays on the battlefield more beautifully than the god who kills him.
  • Gajendra's release — Skandha 8, adhyayas 2-4 — A king of elephants fights a crocodile for a thousand years, and is saved only when he stops fighting and calls.
  • The churning of the ocean — Skandha 8, adhyayas 5-12 — Gods and demons churn the milk ocean together, and the first thing that rises is a poison only Shiva will drink.
  • Vamana and Bali — Skandha 8, adhyayas 15-23 — A dwarf asks a generous king for three steps of land, and the king keeps his word after learning who the dwarf is.
  • Krishna dances on Kaliya — Skandha 10, adhyayas 16-17 — A many-headed serpent poisons a lake of the Yamuna, and a boy jumps in and dances on its hoods until it yields.
  • Rukmini's letter — Skandha 10, adhyayas 52-54 — A princess about to be married against her will sends a brahmana with a letter: come and take me, or I give up my life.

Who embodies it

  • Kunti — A widow who survived poison, fire and war, and asked Krishna for more calamities so that she would keep seeing him.
  • Shiva — In the Bhagavatam the greatest of Vishnu's devotees: he drinks the world's poison and catches the Ganga in his hair.
  • Vritra — The demon raised to destroy Indra, who on the battlefield prayed to be the servant of the Lord's servants.
  • Gajendra — The lord of elephants, caught by a crocodile in a lake, who stopped fighting and offered a lotus to the Lord.
  • Bali — A generous demon king who conquered heaven, gave away the three worlds to a dwarf, and was made the lord of Sutala.
  • Rukmini — A princess of Vidarbha who chose her own husband by letter, and became Krishna's chief queen in Dvaraka.
