Kunti

कुन्ती

A widow who survived poison, fire and war, and asked Krishna for more calamities so that she would keep seeing him.

Appears in

  • Kunti asks for calamities — Skandha 1, adhyaya 8 — As Krishna's chariot turns for Dvaraka, his aunt stops it and asks for something no one asks for: more trouble.

Embodies

  • Surrender and grace — Rescue comes when strength runs out: the elephant, the queen and the king are saved at the point they stop relying on themselves.
  • Devotion under trial — A boy thrown from cliffs, a child sent out by his stepmother: faith in the Bhagavatam is proven where it costs the most.

Questions to explore

  • What dangers does Kunti list in her prayer?
  • Why does Kunti call Krishna the wealth of those who have nothing?
  • Is Kunti's prayer about suffering, or about remembering?
