Skandha 5 of 12 · 26 adhyayas — Srimad Bhagavata Mahapurana (Gita Press, Gorakhpur)

Panchama Skandha — The Fifth Book

पञ्चम स्कन्ध

A royal sage undone by love for a fawn, reborn twice to finish the lesson — and then a map of the whole cosmos.

What happens in this skandha

Priyavrata and Rishabhadeva rule and renounce. Rishabha's son Bharata, after whom the land is named Bharatavarsha, gives up his kingdom but becomes attached to an orphaned fawn, and is born as a deer and then as a silent brahmana who teaches King Rahugana. The second half describes the cosmos: the islands and oceans of Bhu-mandala, the planets, and the hells.

Episodes in this skandha

  • Bharata and the fawn — Skandha 5, adhyayas 7-13 — The king the land is named after renounces a kingdom, then loves an orphaned fawn so much that it costs him two more births.
