The power of the Name

नाम

A name said even by accident at the hour of death carries a sinner past Yama — and the book ends by praising the Name.

Where the text shows it

  • Ajamila calls his son — Skandha 6, adhyayas 1-3 — A dying man calls his youngest son, Narayana, and the name stops Yama's messengers at the bedside.
  • The Kali age foretold — Skandha 12, adhyayas 1-3 — Shuka describes an age when wealth decides virtue and a thread decides caste — and names the one great gift it holds.

Who embodies it

  • Ajamila — A brahmana who fell into a life of theft and gambling, and was saved by the name he had given his youngest child.
