Ganesh Puja Vidhi

The first puja before any new beginning — Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles

Deity: Lord Ganesha Plan with Purohit Ji →

When to perform

Daily morning worship; before any new venture, pooja, or auspicious event; on Chaturthi tithi; during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Significance

Ganesh Puja is the first invocation in every Hindu ritual. As Vighnaharta — the remover of obstacles — Ganesha is invoked at the start of any new undertaking, big or small. The same elephant-headed deity who rules over Mooladhara chakra is petitioned at the threshold of every new house, every wedding, every business, every long journey.

Daily home worship of Ganesha is straightforward — a brief invocation, flowers, sweets, and a mantra. The grand form of the puja, performed during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival in late August or early September, follows the classical Shodashopachara (16-step) format with a clay murti that is immersed (visarjan) at the festival's close.

Ganesha's preferred offerings are modak (steamed sweet dumplings) and red flowers — durva grass is especially sacred. The traditional puja also offers 21 of each item: 21 durva blades, 21 modaks, 21 flowers — a number associated with Ganesha's auspicious tatvas.

Samagri checklist

  • Ganesha murti or image (clay murti for festival; permanent image for daily puja)
  • Red cloth, red flowers (especially hibiscus), durva grass (21 blades minimum)
  • Modak (21 if available, store-bought or home-made)
  • Akshat (rice with turmeric), kumkum, chandan, sandalwood paste
  • Panchamrit: milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar
  • Coconut, banana, betel leaves, betel nuts
  • Diya with ghee or oil, cotton wicks, agarbatti, camphor
  • Mauli (sacred thread), supari, coins for dakshina
  • Water (in a kalash with mango leaves and coconut on top)
  • Copy of the Ganesh Atharvashirsha for chanting (optional but powerful)

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Bathe and wear clean clothes. Set up a clean east-facing puja area with a chowki covered in red cloth.
  2. Place the Ganesha murti or image at the centre. Light the diya and agarbatti.
  3. Begin with Achamana (sipping water three times) and Pranayama to compose the mind.
  4. Perform Sankalpa: hold water and akshat in your right hand, state your name, gotra, place, date, and the purpose of the puja.
  5. Invoke Ganesha with the Ganesh Vandana: 'Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha…'
  6. Offer Avahana (welcoming) — sprinkle flowers on the murti while reciting the avahana mantra.
  7. Offer Asana (seat) — place a small flower at the murti's feet. Then Padya (water for feet), Arghya (water for hands), Achamana, and Snana (bath) — pour panchamrit and then plain water gently over the murti.
  8. Apply chandan, kumkum, and akshat tilak. Drape the murti with red cloth or thread (vastra).
  9. Offer Pushpa (flowers, especially red hibiscus and 21 durva grass blades). Light Dhupa (incense) and Deepa (lamp).
  10. Offer Naivedya — modak, banana, fruits, and sweets. Sprinkle water around the offerings (achamaniya).
  11. Chant the Ganesh Atharvashirsha if known, or recite '108 names of Ganesh' (Ashtottara Shatanamavali). At minimum chant 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah' 108 times.
  12. Perform Aarti with the Ganesh Aarti ('Sukhakarta Dukhaharta'). Conclude with Pushpanjali and Kshama Yachana.
  13. Distribute prasad. For festival visarjan: after the 1.5/3/5/7/10 day period, take the murti to a clean water body and immerse with the chant 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudchya Varshi Lavkar Ya'.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a clay murti for daily Ganesh puja?

No. Daily worship is done with a permanent murti or framed image at your home altar. Clay murtis are specifically for the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, where visarjan (immersion) is part of the ritual.

Why 21 durva grass blades?

21 is associated with Ganesha's auspicious tatvas — 5 indriyas, 5 karmendriyas, 5 pranas, 5 koshas, plus the antahkarana. Offering 21 durva is considered the most pleasing offering to Ganesha after modak.

Can I perform Ganesh visarjan in a bucket at home?

Yes — eco-friendly home visarjan with a clean bucket of water, dissolving the clay murti, and using the soil-water mixture for plants is now widely encouraged, especially in cities and abroad.

What if I cannot get modak?

Any sweet made with jaggery, coconut, or ghee works as a substitute — laddoo, peda, or kheer. The intention matters more than the specific sweet.

Which direction should I face during the puja?

East or north. The Ganesha murti should also face east or north when placed on the altar.
