Vivah Muhurat 2027: Every Wedding Date From January to December, Worked Out for Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, London and New Jersey — and Why Printed Lists Disagree

The 2027 wedding season by the classical day rules, computed by our panchang engine at each city’s sunrise: one of the eleven vivaha nakshatras, one of the eight favourable tithis, Jupiter and Venus clear of the Sun, and outside Kharmas and Chaturmas. India has 41 dates in 2027: five in January, four in February, four in March, five in April, nine in May, four in June and one in July, then none until Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 10 November, seven in November and two in December. London and New Jersey get their own lists, because a later sunrise moves the tithi and nakshatra to another day: a fifth to a third of their dates are not on the Indian list. 2027 has no adhik maas, so May is the fullest month. Includes the closed periods with dates, the dates some panchangs leave out and why, and what a Pandit still checks before a date becomes a muhurat.

For families who are choosing a wedding date in 2027, in India or abroad, and want to see the whole year before they meet the family Pandit. Every Sanskrit word is explained where it first appears. For the rite itself, read our guide to the Vedic wedding.

The answer first: the wedding months of 2027

A vivah muhurat (विवाह मुहूर्त) is the time chosen for a Hindu wedding. Choosing it happens in two steps. First, the calendar rules out most days of the year and leaves a shortlist that is the same for every family in a city. Then a Pandit checks the shortlist against the bride’s and groom’s charts and picks the day and the hour. This guide is the first step for 2027, worked out by our own panchang engine.

In India, 2027 has 41 dates that pass the classical day rules. They are not spread evenly. January to July holds 32 of them, with May the fullest month at nine. Then the calendar closes from mid-July to 10 November, and the year ends with seven dates in November and two in December. If your family wants a wedding in August, September or October 2027, no date in this method is open.

The dates below are for Delhi, and Mumbai and Chennai share all of them but one: in April, Mumbai has 18 April where Delhi and Chennai have 19 April. Other Indian cities will match on almost every date. The closed periods follow the north and west Indian practice that most printed lists use. Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayali and Bengali calendars apply some closures by their own rules, so a family in the south or east should compare this list with its own panchang. For London and New Jersey the lists differ more, and they have their own section below.

  • January — 5 dates, from 19 January (Kharmas ends after Makar Sankranti).
  • February — 4 dates.
  • March — 4 dates, up to 11 March (Kharmas returns from 16 March).
  • April — 5 dates, from 17 April.
  • May — 9 dates, the fullest month of the year.
  • June — 4 dates.
  • July — 1 date, 2 July, before Chaturmas begins on 14 July.
  • August, September and October — none in this method.
  • November — 7 dates, from 11 November, the day after Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
  • December — 2 dates, 8 and 9 December, before Kharmas begins on 17 December.

The closed periods of 2027

In the north and west Indian practice that this list follows, four kinds of period close the calendar for weddings. In 2027 they fall as follows in India. Some communities, especially in the south, hold weddings in months this practice closes, by their own rules. Each date is the first and last civil day that our engine closes at Delhi sunrise.

Kharmas (खरमास) is the time when the Sun is in the sidereal sign of Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces). In north and west Indian practice, which this list follows, weddings are not held while it lasts. In 2027 it closes 1 to 14 January (the Kharmas that began in mid-December 2026), 16 March to 14 April, and 17 to 31 December.

Chaturmas (चातुर्मास), the four months, runs from Devshayani Ekadashi, when Vishnu is held to lie down to sleep, to Dev Uthani Ekadashi, when he wakes. In 2027 it runs from 14 July to 10 November in India. The first date after it is 11 November. For how the waking day is fixed city by city, see our Dev Uthani Ekadashi guide.

Shukra asta and Guru asta are the weeks when Venus (Shukra) or Jupiter (Guru) is too close to the Sun to be seen. A planet in that state is called asta, set, or combust. Muhurat practice does not hold a wedding while either planet is set. Our engine counts Venus as set within 10 degrees of the Sun and Jupiter within 11 degrees. In 2027 Venus is set from 7 July to 17 September and Jupiter from 17 August to 14 September. Both fall almost wholly inside Chaturmas, so they close only 7 to 13 July on their own.

2027 has no adhik maas, the extra lunar month that the calendar adds about once in three years. 2026 had one, an adhik Jyeshtha in May and June, which closed most of that season. In 2027 May and June stay open, which is why May is the fullest month.

How a day qualifies: the tithi and the nakshatra at sunrise

Outside the closed periods, a day must pass two tests at sunrise in your city. The first is the tithi (तिथि), the lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. Eight tithis are favourable for a wedding: Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Dwadashi (12th) and Trayodashi (13th). The rikta (empty) tithis Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi are left out, and so are Ashtami, Purnima and Amavasya.

The second is the nakshatra (नक्षत्र), the lunar mansion the Moon is in. Eleven nakshatras are named for marriage: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Pushya is left out. It is among the best nakshatras for almost every other undertaking, but marriage is its classical exception.

Our engine reads both at local sunrise, because the panchang names a civil day by the tithi and nakshatra that hold at sunrise. Both change during the day. A tithi lasts about a day, so the next one can begin in the afternoon. That matters for the hour of the wedding, which the Pandit chooses, and it is also why a city with a later sunrise can get a different list.

Every 2027 date in India, with its tithi and nakshatra

The list gives each date with the tithi and nakshatra at Delhi sunrise; Mumbai and Chennai have the same tithi and nakshatra on every date they share. “Krishna” marks the dark fortnight, after the full moon, and “Shukla” the bright fortnight, after the new moon. We keep Krishna-paksha dates, as our 2026 guide did. Some panchangs list Shukla-paksha dates only; the next section explains this and the other choices that make printed lists differ.

Three dates pass the tithi and nakshatra tests but are left out, because each is a Sankranti, a day the Sun enters a new sign: 15 January (Makar Sankranti, the day our festival calendar keeps it), 15 March (the Sun enters Meena at 6:55 am) and 15 June (the Sun enters Mithuna at 6:51 pm). Classical muhurat practice avoids a Sankranti day for a wedding, and so does this list.

  • January — Tue 19 (Shukla Ekadashi, Rohini) · Wed 20 (Shukla Trayodashi, Mrigashira) · Sun 24 (Krishna Dwitiya, Magha) · Tue 26 (Krishna Panchami, Uttara Phalguni) · Sun 31 (Krishna Dashami, Anuradha).

London and New Jersey: the same rules, different days

A tithi or a nakshatra begins at one instant for the whole world. What changes from place to place is the sunrise that names the day. London lies about 77 degrees of longitude west of Delhi, and New Jersey about 152 degrees, so by the world clock their sunrise comes roughly five and ten hours after Delhi’s. A tithi that begins in the Indian afternoon can therefore already hold the London or New Jersey sunrise of the same civil day. So the diaspora lists share most dates with India, but not all, and some of their tithis are one step on from India’s.

The closed periods move a little too. In London and New Jersey Chaturmas ends on 9 November, so 10 November is open there and closed in India. Kharmas begins on 15 March in London and New Jersey, a day earlier than in India, because the Sun enters Meena at 1:25 am in London and at 9:25 pm on 14 March in New Jersey. New Jersey’s December Kharmas begins on 16 December.

The lists below are computed at London and at Edison, New Jersey, for sunrise on each date, with the same rules. Each city has 41 dates. London shares 32 of them with the Indian list (Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai together), and New Jersey 27. A family elsewhere in Britain or on the American east coast will match on nearly every date. For any other city, ask Pandit Ji, which computes the panchang at your own place.

  • New Jersey, November and December — Wed 10 November (Shukla Dwadashi, Uttara Bhadrapada) · Thu 11 (Shukla Trayodashi, Revati) · Mon 15 (Krishna Dwitiya, Rohini) · Tue 23 (Krishna Ekadashi, Uttara Phalguni) · Wed 24 (Krishna Dwadashi, Hasta) · Tue 30 (Shukla Tritiya, Mula) · Thu 2 December (Shukla Panchami, Uttara Ashadha) · Wed 8 (Shukla Dashami, Revati).
  • Left out as Sankranti days: London 15 June and 16 November; New Jersey 14 March, 15 May, 15 June and 16 November. London’s 15 January passes the day rules but is left out as well, because Indian calendars keep Makar Sankranti that day. In New Jersey 15 January fails the tithi test.

Why printed lists disagree

Two printed lists of 2027 wedding dates can differ by twenty dates or more, and both can be honest. Each panchang makes a few choices, and each choice adds or removes dates. These are the common ones.

Krishna paksha. Some panchangs list only dates in the bright fortnight, when the Moon is growing. Others, like ours, keep dark-fortnight dates that pass the tithi and nakshatra tests. In our India list, 23 of the 41 dates are in the Krishna paksha. If your family follows a Shukla-only list, drop them.

Weekdays. Many families avoid Tuesday (Mangalvar) for a wedding, and some avoid Saturday too. Our list does not drop weekdays, because the day rules above do not. Our Pandit Ji chat does drop Tuesdays when it suggests a vivah date. Twelve of the 41 Indian dates are Tuesdays.

Nakshatras. Many north Indian panchangs also exclude Krittika and Vishakha, which are not on our list anyway, and some treat Magha with caution as a nakshatra of the ancestors. Two Indian dates in 2027 have Magha: 24 January and 17 April. A family that avoids Magha drops them.

The city of computation. A list printed in Varanasi or Ujjain is computed for that city’s sunrise. Most dates carry over to your city, but a date near a tithi or nakshatra change can move by a day, as the London and New Jersey lists show.

Eclipses, yogas and karanas. The tradition avoids eclipse days. Pandits also weigh the yoga, one of 27 daily combinations of the Sun’s and Moon’s positions, and the karana, the half of a tithi, and avoid Vishti, also called Bhadra, the half-tithi held to obstruct new work. This list does not check eclipses, and neither do the daily panchang nor Pandit Ji’s muhurat tool; your family’s panchang marks them. The yoga and karana belong to the hour and are part of the Pandit’s choice.

From a date on the list to a muhurat

A date on this list is open for weddings in general. It is not yet a muhurat for one couple. Three checks come next, and a Pandit makes them with the bride’s and groom’s birth details.

First, matching. Before any date is fixed, families compare the two charts; our guide to what the 36 gunas mean explains the usual eightfold check, and the Kundali Milan tool computes it. Second, the date against each birth star. A day can be good for everyone and still unfavourable for one person; the count of nine taras (stars, counted in groups from the birth nakshatra to the day’s nakshatra), explained in our Tarabala guide, is the first such test, and it must suit both. Third, the hour. The central rite of the wedding is timed to a lagna, the rising sign of the hour, chosen on the day.

So the shortlist does its work when the family takes three or four dates from it to the Pandit, rather than one. For the general method behind every muhurat, see Finding the right muhurat.

Honest questions, honest answers

Is any date in August, September or October 2027 open? Not in this method. Chaturmas runs from 14 July to 10 November in India. Venus is set from 7 July to 17 September, and Jupiter from 17 August to 14 September. Some communities, especially in the south, do hold weddings in these months on their own rules; ask your family Pandit.

Is Akshaya Tritiya on the list? Many families treat Akshaya Tritiya as a day that needs no muhurat check. Our festival calendar keeps Akshaya Tritiya on Saturday, 8 May 2027 in Delhi, so 8 May is the day to keep. The Tritiya also holds sunrise on 9 May. Both days pass the day rules, and both are on the list.

Why does our list start on 19 January when Kharmas ends on 14 January? Because 15 January is Makar Sankranti in India, and no date from 16 to 18 January passes the tithi and nakshatra tests.

Our wedding is in India but the family lives abroad. Which list do we use? The list for the place where the wedding is held. The muhurat belongs to the place of the rite.

Can we marry on a date that is not on the list? Many families do, for good reasons, and a Pandit can choose the best hour on the day you have. This list shows where the classical rules are fully met; it does not forbid the other days.
